for hantavirus. it is spread by inspected deer mice and there have been 9 cases, three people died. today they filled out a questionnaire and give blood. >> it will look at hantavirus infection, any past infection and the questionnaire shows work habits, living habits, what kind of training they have had. >> reporter: it is a pilot program for the 2500 employees. some say this is a rare opportunity it learn more about hantavirus since many people can be infected without knowing it. >> we know when people get sick and show symptoms the mortality rate is high and they get sick and many die. it would be important to know for anybody in medicine to really understand exactly, is that just a small portion of the total number. >> reporter: some were surprised the state waited so

down and then grabbed cash from the registers. one person said the area is a good neighborhood but there are some problems. >> it will happen. you know, it is bound to happen. you know, you have people that get mugged out here, cars get broken into it. it happens. my car got stolen one time. >> they were all black men in their 20s. no one was hurt. san jose police raided a building after a record that marijuana was growing inside. someone making a maintenance check spotted the marijuana plants and called police. they found 250 plants inside with a street value of $250,000. a neighbor noticed a weird smell seeping into his own business. >> next door they had a lot of

condensation in the windows. maybe we thought that was going through our walls. >> so far there are no reports of arrests. in san jose police are looking for two men suspected of beating a cook last night. the cook was found outside las palapas before 11:00 p.m. after he went out to smoke. police think the beating is gang related but is unsure if the cook was targeted. tonight the victim is in critical but stable condition. parents are scared and frustrated after a student, a 9- year-old girl was kidnapped from the campus last week. ktvu's alex savage tells us even after assurances from the cool, parents are not

new home sales edged down .3% from july to $373,000. the median price of a new house potched last month was 2 -- purchased last months was $270,000 and that is up 11% which is the biggest one month increase on record. on wall street today the numbers on home sales combined with europe's economy put a damper on stocks. the dow is down 44 to 13,413. the nasdaq is down 24 at 3,093. the s&p is down 8 to 1,433. research in motion announced yesterday its number of subscribers gone up, that surprised analyst whose expected the number to go down. they closed at $7 a share.

this year is the worst on record when it comes to west nile virus in the united states and in san francisco they got their first human case of west nile virus in years. ktvu's david stevenson is here now and tells us what the city is pouring down storm drains to deal with this program. david? >> reporter: a program that puts a chemical in the storm drains is aimed at fighting west nile virus. >> reporter: making a special

delivery. designed to kill mosquito eggs growing down below. >> we keep a watch over these. the problem is stagnant water in parks. >> reporter: the program is important now, san francisco last week recorded its first case of human west nile virus in 7 years. >> the tip of the ice burg. >> reporter: officials last week found one that tested positive for the virus. mosquito transmit the virus from birds to human. there are more san franciscans infected than they are aware of. >> only 1-5 will develop a illness and 1-150 will develop the severe encephalitis. the u.s. is experiencing the largest outbreak of west nile virus since 13 years ago.
